According to the World Health Organization’s herbal monographs, using valerian as a sedative and sleep-promoting agent is supported by clinical data.
It is often used as a safer alternative for synthetic sedatives, such as the benzodiazepines, in treatment of nervous excitation and anxiety-induced sleep disturbances.
